Grove/ Heismann Project

Building our new home next to the Colorado wilderness

Our mountain house is mostly finished, so Kendall (our son-in-law) and I are still finishing up some inside details, such as window sills, baseboards and some doors. Our project was started mid-September 2002. The foundation, basement, first and second floors are all concrete. The outside walls for the basement, first and second is being built using the ICF method (Insulated Concrete Forms). This building method should give us a insulated house that has a Typical R Value of 20.7. Most houses have Typical R Value of 11.48. The roof will be wood and composite shingles when completed.

2002 winter - still cutting trees to clean up the site

In 2001, we where starting to burn stumps from 250 trees that have been cut down around the house site, road and for a fire break.

In winter of 2002 and 2003 it is too dry to burn anything and the stump pile just keep getting bigger

Finishing up the well. They went 552 feet, but found lots of water, in fact this well is almost a artesian well, if we don't use enough water it runs out the top of the well

This is the big digger we rented to prepare the site, dig the foundation and leach field, which is up hill from the house. Would you believe that we have to pump that stuff up hill to the leach field, because we are too close to the wet lands. ie: creek

Kendall and Rand Wampler are compacting the basement floor.

What a dirty job because the soil is so dry.

Ready to pour the first floor walls.

The sun doesn't get to the first floor this time of the year.

The second floor is done and they are setting the walls .

Setting the "I" beam for the Bonus Room above the garage.

The Bonus Room will be the Grove family room.

It was a struggle to keep the snow and ice off the new lumber.

We had to wait for better weather to set the trust on the rest of the house.

Getting ready for the roofers.

We where lucky we didn't have very much snow that winter.

Watching the roofers from the hill above the back yard.

Kendall balancing on loader bucket to install the windows.

Waiting for the roofers to finish porch roof and getting ready for the stucco.

Finishing up the chimney.

The log railing are being sanded.

Interior dry wall and painting are finished.

This is shortly before we got our "C.O." the middle of December 2003. The boards on the rack of Gus's new truck are the last redwood we need for the front porch steps.

We need to wait for warmer weather
